Dear Readers

　　　　These stories were written to try to capture some small moments in time, like snapshots, casual photos that preserve precious memories of what at first may seem like any ordinary slices of life, except that life is never really ordinary. As the days unfold, they bring with them laughter, adventure, sadness, mystery, or whatever life holds. These vignettes are written through gaijin eyes, round eyes of an often astonished foreigner living in Japan and loving each day for whatever surprises it may bring.
　　　　It is my sincere hope that these stories will be entertaining and of interest to my family and friends everywhere as well as useful to my ESL students in Setagaya, Tokyo and others whose mother tongue is not English. Furthermore, I would be delighted if these humble stories could contribute to increasing Japanese people’s proficiency in English.
　　　　I wanted to express my appreciation and gratitude, and to give something back to kind people both in Japan and in America who have repeatedly asked that I write about some of the experiences my husband, Francis Kohno and I have had in Japan during these past ten years. These stories were written for you all with love.

読者の皆様へ

　流れる時のなかのささやかな瞬間を、スナップショットのようにとらえようとして、数々の物語を記しました。一見、人生のありふれた断片のようでありながら、とても貴重な瞬間を撮ったさりげない写真のような物語です。もちろんありふれた人生なんてないのですが……。日々の暮らしは、笑いや冒険、悲しみやミステリーを味あわせてくれます。まさに人生で出会うあらゆるものを。これらの小さな物語は、「外人の目」を通して書かれたものです。日本で生活をして、意外なことばかりの日々をとても気に入りながら、いつも驚いて見開いている「外人の目」です。
　これらの物語を楽しんでもらえたらいいなと心から思っています。そして、私の家族やさまざまな場所にいる友人たち、そして東京の世田谷のESL（English as a Second Language）の私の生徒たちをはじめ、英語を母国語としない人々にとって興味深いものであってくれたらと願っています。さらにこれらのささやかな物語によって、日本の方々が英語力を高めてくれたなら、とてもうれしいです。
　日本とアメリカの心やさしい人たちに、感謝の思いを伝え、何かお返しをしたいと思っていました。彼らは、私と夫のフランシス河野が10年間に日本で体験したことを書き綴るべきだと繰り返し勧めてくれました。これらの物語は、思いを込めてそんな皆さんのために書いたものです。
